fatcat (uk) #fat 1277 ep

alog / astral social clubsplit series #20” long playing record

  • alog - every word was once an animal (12:41)

  • astral social club - clarion super-cortex (7:55)
  • astral social club - vurt chorale #1 (6:13)
  • astral social club - corby kiss (2:49)
december 2009 release ; new entrant into fat cat’s legendary, decade-long “split series” ...

first norwegian duo alog offer a side-length song working a wandering rhodes-piano bassline, fizzing acoustic & electronic percussion, and cut-up speech-patterns / singing that oddly reminds me of that early fat cat various artistsno 8, 8.5, 9” single ...

... then neil campbell’s astral social club (here working with johntirath singh nirmalaclyde evans, spider stacy, and paul walsh) provide three takes that mix ecstatic thumping kick-drums, layers-deep electronic pileups, and even a “sweetacoustic guitar interlude that builds into a harmonizer glee-fest before resolving into some more electro-blat ...

an excellent record ; among the best work i’ve heard from each party. highly recommended !!!

alog / astral social club
split series #20

release date: 12/8/09

highly-anticipated next installment in fatcat’s acclaimed split 12series
limited-edition vinyl-only release with handmade jackets

another high quality, album-length release, the twentieth 12 in our acclaimed split series features two artists who’ve carved out very singular, purposeful paths for themselves. here, both roll out their markedly different but complementary material, the unifying element being a heavily skewed outsider take on dance-?oor electronica/techno.

alog is the duo of espen sommer eide and dag-are haugan. mainstays at the rune grammofon label, their unique, hybrid sound has unfurled a series of abstract yet accessible, self-contained sound-worlds, each animated with their own internal logic, mixing a wide variety of both electronic and acoustic sources into something warm, intricate and organic. quirky and unpredictable, they have refused any ?xed position, instead embracing the freedom to ?it and root in the cracks between strands of minimalism, electronica, post-rock, improv and vernacular musics - merging woozy, stuttering electronica (a la oval / nobukazu takemura / etc.), with rich, shoegazey guitars, freeform improvisation, scandinavian folk, ?eld recording and the masterful editing and soundscaping of electroacoustic composition.

a stirring, 13-minute long track created expressly for the 12” format that sounds like nothing they’ve previously released, “every word“ was made during alog’s 2008 tour of japan. a live improvisation, the “shouting choir” was recorded at a primary school in bergen with regular alog collaborator nicholas h. møllerhaug. made into a 3-part narrative using mainly synthesizer, guitar and vocals, it’s a stunning, rapidly-expanding piece that increasingly ramps up the tension, accelerating its energy levels, seemingly buckling and collapsing under its own weight/energy, before ?nding its feet again.

astral social club is the project of neil campbell. a pivotal ?gure on the uk post-punk underground, with a vast catalogue and numerous collaborations, campbell ?rst came to prominence in the early ‘90s as a member of nottingham’s a band, a collaborator with matthew bower, and later as a founding member of vibracathedral orchestra. as asc, campbell integrates psych-rock and exploratory fusion of the 70s, early ’90s techno/electronica,80s post-punk, krautrock, and the thriving home-brew of today’s psych/noise under-ground, asc tracks form an unstable, exhilarating slew of densely stacked textural detail with seemingly no ?xed centre, piling electronic and acoustic textures together – spluttering drum machines, gurgling electronics, mangled guitar lines, processed violin and all manner of other sonic detritus.

the three tracks here were recorded by campbell, john clyde-evans, paul walsh and the poguesspider stacy. the 135bpm blood-pulse and super-abundant textural growth of “clarion super-cortex” is described by campbell as a ”rolling-through-the-cracks techno format invented by clyde-evans, and put through the asc brass mangler ... an imaginary club hit for people who like to dance between the beats”. this mulches down into the beatlessvurt chorale #1,” weaving several different jams together. a wake-up slap in the face after such shimmering drift, ‘corby kiss’ offers a tribute to the hard-living ex-steel men of the northants town where campbell grew up.

the first non rune-grammophon release from this norwegian duo, collecting earlier works and non-album bits & bots... those who have familiarized themselves with the pair’s oeuvre will be both surprised and elated with the proceedings herein; a veritable festival of digital-sound, beautiful rhythmic clicky-bits, frozen drones and a bit of pop nuggetry. as with all melektronikks thusfar, the design is an immaculate collection of tonal blobs and weird, almost murakami-esque eyes & cartoon shapes. an excellent collection from one of my favorite norwegian acts, both on and off the stage...
melektronikk press release...
this album contains 13 tracks of sound collected from various times & places - an alog memory bank if you like.

we are happy to announce that our new cd just arrived! it´s called "catch that totem! (1998-2005)" and feature a selection of songs from our archive of unreleased and hard-to-find material. it was collected in co-operation with the record label melektronikk (known for their safe-as-milk festival). here´s what they have to say:

"over a cup of coffee and a slice of cake we decided together with alog to make a compilation album with the broadest possible scope: an album featuring unreleased tracks from before their first release, unavailable tracks from eps, a couple of remixes and brand new tracks that has never been released. alog carefully selected their favourites from the extensive alog archive and sent it to us. we listened gleefully to everything we received. after long discussions and great uncertainty we are proud to present these thirteen tracks as our common favourites: the best of alog's unreleased and hard to find material according to themselves and two of their biggest fans."

the artwork was made by our local (bergen) heroes grandpeople and is a deluxe 12 page booklet with liner notes from us and some explosive design (for some reason the words "evil", "chewing gum", "japanese manga", "black metal" and "summer" was mentioned during our discussions with the designers).

rcd 2054 - phonophani: phonophani

originally released in 1998 as a limited edition (500 only) on biosphere´s biophon label. a breath of fresh air at the time, this excellent debut from phonophani still stands as one of the very best electronica albums ever released in norway. well crafted and full of ideas and original turns, it has a rare timeless quality that makes it sound as fresh today as it did back then. it´s difficult to come up with comparisons, but certain aspects of early alog (naturally) and boards of canada can serve as references. this issue includes three bonus tracks (20 minutes) from the same period.

rcd 2020 - alog: duck-rabbit

follow-up to "red shift swing", an album that received massive critical acclaim and showed a totally fresh approach to the art of sampling. "duck-rabbit" follows this course but is to a greater extent born from improvisations during and after concerts, something that has given the album a more extrovert and energetic feel.

the second album from phonophani, aka espen sommer eide (alog), his first from 1998 so far being the only release on biosphere's biophon label. phonophani's work is characterized by various manipulated "live instruments" seamlessly integrated with pure electronic sounds. espen says of the title that "sampling is a form of gene manipulation where you arrange and rearrange soundparts from your own playing and the works of others to create new organisms of sound".

qpop cd040
cd in digifile
limited edition 500
total time: 72:18

…a thousand girls, a thousand thrills, a million ways to spend your time when we get back, i'll drop the line…

cd compilation “million ways to spend your time” is dedicated to 5th birthday of ukrainian label quasi pop. it represents new & rare works works by label mates and exclusive tracks from quasi pop's friends from different countries:

black to comm — fantastic deep gentle track made with vinyl loops, sounds like “old kraut-drone-psychedelic stuff”. this project runs by dekorder label owner marc richter from hamburg, germany.

continental fruit is the member of bergen's experimental scene, but he hasn't got huge discography yet. continental fruit have been released only 7" vinyl on smalltown supersound, but we got really rare new track from him!

peel off the bass — our favourite ukrainian rock group recorded especially for this cd first track (in romantic garage kraut-style) for the last few years.

monofilament — the first recorded track after 10 years break by this experimental duo from bergen, norway. monofilament are: andreas brandal & espen sommer-eide (phonophani, alog). crazy tape manipulations!

tv pow — deep environmental piece from this chicago-based free-improv trio. tw pow are well-known artists after their successful releases on labels such as box media, bottrop, erstwhile, staalplaat & gentle giant.

lasse marhaug — surely, the main man of norwegian noise. lasse is an active solo-artist, also he is a half of outstanding duo jazkamer. besides he owns the label, working as designer and takes part in projects origami republica and del. here he presents psychedelic-noise-collage stuff.

andrey kiritchenko — quiet electro-acoustic piece with beautiful guitar drones and overtones. probably, andrey is the most prolific & successful ukrainian electronic/experimental artist. he is also the core founder of experimental ukrainian label nexsound.

origami epileptika — norwegian multi-culture, cross-genre art-unit origami (replika, republika etc). one of his faces is weird psycho-country drone composition which is represented here.

8rolek — cracking and swinging electronic record by one of the leading artists from great polish label mik music.

jorgen knudsen — inexhaustible norwegian inventor, dreamer and experimentalist recorded for our release congratulant ecologic froggy jazz. pop, noise & circus-maximus!

olivier lamm — “j-pop style” song from one of the leading and most interesting artists from french super avant-pop label active suspension.

the complainer — another powerful beat-based outfit from poland runs by wojtek kucharczyk, he is also the main force of mik music label.

andreas brandal — “analogue wizard” and our good friend from norway presented us probably the loudest, most abrasive and intensive track on the compilation. pretty good record in “old good industrial style”.

alexey petrov — he is the author of this minimalistic, but great-sounding piece for laptop and 2 samples. he is most likely our favorite electronic artist for the moment. actually, he is one of the most talented young audio experimentalists from ukraine.

batcheeba — the newest composition from very talented singer/songwriter janne waage berset from bergen, norway.

charsky — the new and exclusive song from mysterious & charismatic ex-leader of the cult ukrainian group nekraina.

biblioteka prospero — single-minded but spontaneous live improvisation for saxophone, vintage soviet synth, prepared piano and bass. also you can hear the short «festive» text in russian.

great thanks a lot for all contributors!
this cd comes in high-quality digifile with nice “sexy jazzy gdr” style.
