april 2007 release; an electro-acoustic suite by the increasingly prolific/excellent composer alessandro bosetti.

exposé” is based on recordings of audrey chen’s voice, perfectly mickey-moused with rhodes piano lines, then processed in an aggregate manner not too far removed from alvin lucier’s “i am sitting in a room...” maybe not bosetti’s most immediately engaging work (his recent discs for rossbin and crouton have been nothing short of amazing) but an interesting enough alpha-zone experiment...

exposé
tri-fold deluxe digipak

based on a series of 33 musical ideas written, printed, framed and “exposed” in a recent installation in milan, exposé is the first of a new cycle of works as well as the result of alessandro bosetti’s fascination with speech loops. the mesmerizing voice of audrey chen, endlessy repeating the same sentence over the entire duration of each piece, is full of musical nuances, and it rewards close attention. the result is a weird and fascinating experience, that takes the listener through a surreal sonic space.

the misty, microtonal electronics and instrumental layers are arranged and recorded in an extremely precise fashion. the slowly shifting speech-derived rhythmical patterns provide a subtle, low-key backdrop to the vocal parts, perhaps suggesting the option of adopting an ambient-like listening strategy, while at the same time the use of headphones will enhance the work's strangely compelling blend of the surreal and hypnotic.

alessandro bosettiexposé” artist's multiple

die schachtel’s “art edition” of the alessandro bosettiexposè” release... packaged inside a roughly 10” square matrix of printed vellum is a folio containing 30-odd pages of text and poetry by bosetti, with the disc attached to the last page.

granted, this gives much more information as to the modus behind the “exposè” project than the mass-market edition, but honestly this is more for the “heads” than the casual fan of bosetti’s music.

exposé” - limited edition
audio cd + 34 art sheets in a special cover with hand drawn translucent dustjacket, numbered and signed by the author.

this limited edition includes the 33 art sheets presenting the musical ideas that generated the compositions on the cd. the complete series was printed, framed and “exposed” in a recent installation at the o’artoteca art gallery in milan, in march 2007. the minimalistic design is the result of a collaborative work with die schachtel’s designer dinamo, who has typographically interpreted alessandro’s surprising conceptual “scores”, expanding the music into a visual territory that gives a completely new listening perspective to the fascinating music of this very creative musicians.

alessandro bosetti/ annette krebs (06.2003)

in the summer of 2001 we got a recording from alessandro bosetti, saxophone player, improviser, composer of musique concrète and at that time having lived in berlin for less than a year. the recording has pieces that he had just recorded with the guitarist annette krebs. the decision to release this recordings was made quickly, and in the summer of 2002 it should have appeared. due to an unlucky chain of events, the recording is appearing only now, nine months later. but nothing has changed about its radical nature, its unconditional modernity.

krebs and bosetti are among some of the most exciting musicians from berlin, both have long been well-known in international circles. annette krebs, who plays an electro-acoustically prepared classical guitar, belongs on an equal basis with improvisers (and composers) such as andrea neumann, taku sugimoto, toshimaru nakemura or axel dörner, with whom she has worked with, she belongs in a category of those musicians who have expanded the concept of improvisation beyond free jazz, post-serialism or the "english school" in the last few years. stillness, minimalism, noise (but the later is not meant in the sense of a racket, but as a kind of unmediated sound), rustling, consciousness of structure and spontaneity, all of these experience a new value through these musicians - above all through annette krebs' way of playing the guitar.

the saxophone player alessandro bosetti has also devoted himself to a radical noise-like way of playing, and yet one always senses how strongly he has been influenced by steve lacy and modern jazz of the 60's and 70's. in their duets, they do not, however, simply extend their work on noise. the music is formed by a pronounced sense of structure. they work on short units, with many pauses and stillness - but never for the sake of a pause (or stillness). each pause has it exactly defined place in the dynamics of the music. bosetti and krebs savor monochrome tonal colors, research the gray behind the gray - and nonetheless this music is not monumental, not simply noise, not a hermetic block. it is a very exact, reflected music that never becomes overbearing or stiff. it has something casual, in the best sense of the word, it's non-ambitious. although one really senses the work involved in it and necessary for it, the music remains unstrained, completely nonchalant and cool.

the artwork is from the musicians, made after a model from franz hautzinger.

intruiging set of electro-acoustic etudes by composer alessandro bosetti; constructed using only the voices and actions of the handicapped living in milan and berlin. once again; basil kirchin’s epic “worlds within worlds” series comes into view as a possible precedent... but whereas kirchin produced 4 side-long slabs of multi-layered drone-sound by slowing down the voices of handicapped children to a terrifying roar, bosetti’s pieces are light and concise; usually focusing on a single word or sound, mixing several different utterances into short, “song-length” pieces.

author: alessandro bosetti
title: "il fiore della bocca”
label: rossbin
format: cd
catalog #: rs025
time: 48'47"

produced in 2003 for the sound art department of a german radio station, "il fiore della bocca" is one of the most controversial text sound compositions by alessandro bosetti. composed exclusively with the voices of physically and mentally handicapped people, the piece displays an impressive richness, depth and variety of sound, covering the full range of musical possibilities of the spoken voice; from heavily processed to completely unprocessed, naked and direct. the piece has an ambiguous nature that lies somewhere between an experimental radio play and an extended, powerfully voice driven, noise composition. bosetti has taken an impressive journey into what is commonly perceived as "disturbing". he has thus engaged in a process of transformation and metamorphosis with both the sound materials and their perceptions in order to develop musical beauty out of these "abnormal" voices.

a long series of conversations, where spastic, aphasic and larynx-less persons are confronted with examples of "deconstructed voice" (in the tradition of experimental music and sound poetry), has been the core of a two year long intimate relationship with those speakers and the starting point of the compositional process. all commentaries, reflections and reactions had been recorded in order to create a new composition with those collected materials. similar to his other text sound pieces like "african feedback", "everyday objects", "the listeners", "the mouth" or "zwölfzungen", conversations, human interaction, comprehension and misunderstanding are essential to this piece. since it's premiere on deutschland radio kultur in 2004, it has been performed many times; in presence of the original speakers and in several live multichannel performances which provocated a wide and passionate range of reactions and discussions. "il fiore della bocca", is intended as a piece in the form of a flower, either one of the red roses claudia is singing about in the middle section of the composition, or a mouth-flower, as the title suggests. also, a flower close in inspiration to the weathered, ephemeral and dying flowers that zeami used to describe the quality of nô theater actors. it's a piece based on love, human interaction and the contemplation of differences which reaches the point where the extremely different becomes the same.

recorded and composed between september 2002 and august 2003 in milan and berlin.first broadcasted by deutschland radio kultur, october 24th, 2003.

completely underrated set of köln-lineage abstract electronic drone-compositions (albeit sourced to acoustic / electric instrumentation) calling to mind everything from moebius & roedelius’ kluster / harmonia era works to the slowly shifting / mutating late 70s work of françois bayle ...
sonig press release...
c-schulz - electronics, vocoder, percussion, concrete sounds, accordeon, organ, bass, tubes, oboe

andreas gogol - guitar on 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8
harald “sack” ziegler - horn on 1, 4, 5, 6
kornelia bittman - violin on 1, 5, 8
jan st. werner - drums on 3
andi toma - guitar on 3
alessandro bosetti - saxophone on 2

c-schulz's new solo-outing 5. flicker tunes is on a par with c-schulz & hajsch as far as economy of means and musical depth are concerned. the cologne-based composer grants himself as well as his listeners the luxury of taking one's time to embark on a journey through his "concrete" sounds and expansive sonic planes. this music plays with varying grades of depth - sometimes it feels really close to the body, then again it submerges in the far corner of its musical environment. its listeners are witnesses of three-dimensional effects.

fluttering modulations in diverse tempi play havoc with our inbred patterns of hearing. layers of sound are heaped upon one another meticulously and then moved in the slightest of nuances. thus microtonal shiftings come into being, which now form an enormous soundscape and then weave themselves into the densest of soundtextures. seemingly without effort, c-schulz annuls our concept of time in popmusic, declaring it a conventional burden of which he rids himself as well as his listeners.

the result is that no matter how often you listen to 5. flicker tunes, it will never sound the same, nor will it ever wear out. a magical work, no less.

in addition to interviews of 12 musicians/1 group residing in berlin (gregor hotz, nicholas bussmann, merle bennett, thomas ankersmit, ignaz schick, hans strobl, pure, annette krebs, andrea neumann, caramel empties, alessandro bosetti, boris baltschun, and kai fagaschinski), this "extra" issue of imj features 2 cds with 18 tracks by a total of over 30 musicians, almost all of whom are berlin residents: adeline rosenstein/andrea neumann, annette krebs/steffi weismann, kommando raumschiff zitrone, michael thieke unununium, lucio capece/axel doerner/robin hayward, tunar, alessandro bosetti, tony buck/andrea neumann, sink, marzipan marzipan, kalkuel & leidenschaft, boris hauf, phillip sollman, thomas ankersmit, ignaz schick/jason forrest, burkhard beins, rechenzentrum, and blumm.

the interviews were conducted by toshimaru nakamura during a visit to berlin in january 2005 (with the exception of the email interview of annette krebs by taku sugimoto, which took place between january and april 2006). in addition to discussing their musical activities, the artists share many of their thoughts about the berlin scene. their candid views reveal the dynamism that has characterized that scene since the late '90s. berlin musician nicholas bussmann was in charge of the selection of artists for the accompanying cds, and the result is an ideal compilation for those who want to know more about today's berlin scene. through the words and music of musicians on the scene, this issue explores the current situation of improvised music (and related genres) in berlin.
