may 2008 release ; the debut release from the long-running nyc-based duo of aki onda (tapes, mainly) and alan licht (guitar, ditto) ... five pieces working an inspired spell of improv-magic ; results vary from studied, gestural interplay rife with pointillist interjections to noise-walls & tape-hiss addled drones ... alan’s playing is, typically, top-notch & onda’s pause-button antics & interjected snatches of plunderphonic audio keep the pace brisk. the room-fidelity throughout gives it an in-situ feel, regardless of whether these are live-recordings or in-studio constructs (if there’s one area i love; it’s a gray one ...) - excellent stuff.

alan licht & aki onda everydays

debut collaboration of new york artists and long-time duo partners alan licht and aki onda, whose combined history connects artists straddling the pop and experimental worlds, including fennesz, loren connors, takemura nobukazu, lee ranaldo, and toriko nujiko.

in the past decade their montage-inspired solo work—licht's permutational guitar and tape pieces on rabbi sky and a new york minute, onda's field recording recontextualizations on bon voyage! and ancient & modern—has co-existed with their experimental sound/visual projects text of light (licht) and cinemage (onda).

everydays is five grandly formed soundscapes that mix onda's poetic/textural cassette sounds and the rhythmic/lyrical pull of licht's guitar. morphing from recognizable structures to dissonant hammered chunks and rapid cut-ups, the album perfectly weaves their signature applications of sound diaries, minimalism, grainy fidelity, looping and free blues into a dynamic and ambitious statement.

bon voyage!

improvised music from japan, imj-510
released in october 2003

all cassette compositions by aki onda
cassette recordings made in new york - rio de janeiro - salvador - tokyo - paris - tangier - valencia - lisbon - london.... between 1988 and 2002
edited at the bregman electro-acoustic music studio, dartmouth college, new hampshire, in 2002
mastered by aki onda and toshimaru nakamura
packaged in a cardboard jacket
artwork by akira sasaki
includes liner notes by aki onda in japanese and english

aki onda's many activities since the nineties have included participating in the group audio sports, with eye yamatsuka and nobukazu takemura, and releasing albums under his own name, as well as producing recordings by numerous musicians in japan and other countries. for three years beginning in 2000, onda was a composer in residence at dartmouth college (in new hampshire). he recently shifted his base of activity to new york, where he is working with cassette recorders and electronics to create highly abstract, original works of music.

to make this album, onda spent two years editing a huge collection of field recordings that he'd amassed over a 14-year period (between 1988 and 2002), randomly taping sounds in locations around the world. to onda, this is both a document and a memory of a personal journey. various sounds--a city's hustle and bustle, the chirping of birds, music being played, children's voices--are layered one atop another. except for the last track, there is little in the way of what would normally be called a "work of music." on the other hand, no work digs so painfully deeply into the interior of the artist onda. seven tracks in all.

aki onda is having something of a resurgence in popularity after years of working the fringe-sidelines (i, for one, remember his days leading “audio sports” with a young dj “kool jazz” nobukazu takekura and mr. yamatsuka eye on select sides). his more recent work with mono and his cassette series show a decidedly lo-fi approach sound...

gallery off site in yoyogi, tokyo--one of the world's most well known venues for performance of the new improvised music. off site's core event is the monthly improvisation series meeting at off site, established and still hosted by tetuzi akiyama and toshimaru nakamura. following the critical success (both domestic and international) of vol. 1, released 2002, this second cd of live recordings documents the period between december 2001 and may 2002. like the first volume, it consists of excerpts from concerts by the two meeting hosts, plus one or two guest musicians. the difference is that here, the excerpts are fewer and longer, allowing the listener to better appreciate each musician's unique style. this cd documents the musical evolution--which one might even call the off site sound--characterized by extreme quietness and sparsity of sound. this is an indispensable record of the improvised music avant-garde currently gaining worldwide attention.

staubgold 72 - various artists - "jukebox buddha" cd

15 tracks made with the fm3 buddha machine.

feat. exclusive contributions by adrian sherwood + doug wimbish, blixa bargeld, sunno))), thomas fehlmann, sun city girls, gudrun gut, kammerflimmer kollektief, jan jelinek/andrew pekler/hanno leichtmann, mapstation, aki onda, robert henke, es, alog, minit and wang fan.

it was about three years ago whilst loafing in one of beijing's finer foot massage joints that christiaan virant, the other half of chinese duo fm3 to zhang jian, began to riff mutation fantasies as applied to the buddha machine. the buddha machine is a literal translation from mandarin for the small plastic box, driven by two double 'a' batteries, that grinds out low-fi looped sutra variants across the whole of china and south east asia. the original concept was to locate the nest, infect the breeding process with the new strain of meditative sonics developed by fm3 over the previous couple of years, lop off a hundred or so clones for promotion purposes and bounce off the impact with a few european gigs. that idea died a death as soon as the little babies fell into the hands of brian eno, a rare musical expeditionary from the far west visiting china, and the notorious alan bishop of the sun city girls, who had burnt regular paths further south but had never ventured into mainland china. only just over twelve months later the little beggar polls 88 thousand pages on google (the number 8 is the luckiest number in china) and has a dedicated my space page almost as amusing as the soundbox itself when only the pope is missing from its fanbase!

on "jukebox buddha", the first chapter of buddha version, disciples of many levels stretch, compress, reconfigure, rub and dust, fuck around with the nine floating loops clipped out from fm3's confrontational world of quiet. moving straight to level four the entry from einsturzende neubauten's blixa bargeld finds the beijing resident submitting to sweeter harmonies than those with which he is traditionally associated even eschewing voice in a move that could free him from the eternal cycle of rebirth. level two devotee wang fan, longtime associate of fm3, builds environmentally friendly filigrees of sound whilst new initiates sherwood and wimbish immediately recognize the key importance of bass to the buddha. a true zen moment is struck by the shameless humour of jan jelinek, andrew pekler and hanno leichtmann's commercial but robert henke (monolake) takes a more devotional approach with a lift from his new album of droneage based entirely on loops from the buddha machine. although mapstation sound like mapstation, in an act of submission thomas fehlmann bucks the beat and builds floating layers of naked vocal. the sun city girls prove they have visited more temples in the east than any other westerner and sunno))) arrive from a different dimension with a restraint not common in their work of late. in fact, the absence of self indulgence pervades many of these contributions, as with minit whose contribution is the only one to actually sound like fm3 but none more so than gudrun gut's analysis of the creative process employed in producing the track she has offered here.

as an introduction to this album here are some extracts from david toop's liner notes.

"most music in japan has little to recommend it; it is a sonic equivalent of those brutal concrete towers or the transitory chaos of multi-storey teen-fashion emporia in aoyama.

but a sonic underground thrives, creatively if not financially, and perhaps it should be compared with the shabby golden-gai drinking dens of shinjuku, faint reminders of a lost time when desire and transgression shared endless cups of sake with political and artistic radicalism...

...how is it possible to live within and react against an extremely regulated society, politically moribund, engulfed by consumerism, technological innovation, mediated images, a confusion of influences and traditions? agitation and stillness may seem to be opposing strategies, yet they converge at a certain point...

...surging deep beneath the noir turbulence of merzbow and so takahashi, the car crash ruins of otomo yoshihide and ground zero, the curated urban fragments of viewmaster, the technocratic complexity of bisk and yoshihiro hanno's multiphonic ensemble, the piercing intensity of sachiko m, the childlike placidity of aki onda, yoshio machida and haco, is a conflicting sense of clarity attained through struggle. out of turmoil, a stained purity is revealed.

listening to this alchemical transmutation, i think of fujieda baian, the central character of shotaro ikenami's historical novels. professional assassin and acupuncturist, baian kills to live, lives to heal. at the beginning of yasunari kawabata's novel, the sound of the mountain, ogata shingo hears an elusive sound, the faint rumble of the mountain at the rear of his house. "it was as if a demon had passed, making the mountain sound out." shingo shakes his head, thinking the disturbance might be a ringing in his ears. feeling fear, perhaps he hears the collapsing certainties of the future, our present, where everything is in flux.
