dungeon taxis (new zealand) #dt 04 ep

richard francis / clinton watkins / adam willettss/t” seven inch single record

  • richard francis & clinton watkins

  • adam willets
august 2009 release ; entirely gripping split single, offering a side each by a trio of new zealand-based composer / artists :: first, the duo of richard francis & clinton watkins (motion-oriented, feedback-laden power drone ; epic) and adam willetts (grimy korg-filter resonances, barely keeping a swarm of voltage-controlled locusts at bay) ...
dungeon taxis press release...
richard francis & clinton watkins / adam willetts. s/t 7"

emulsified dunes and slowmo mistrals committed to 7 inches of confinement somewhere in i zwicky 18 by the antipodal trinity of the mind-juicing club: cmr zone-clerk richard francis, whitebassclinton watkins and saturn’s adam willetts. probably written in 1610-11. first side blasts in with the sand-drinking mug-shot francis/watkins hydrahead, conducting light-year syncopations, cryptozoological moshpits and gale enemy forces through the doorway of your featherweight stucco homes. flipside captures the carbonated mind of adam willetts in the same place anakin skywalker must have been in just before he beamed over to the shadier side of synapse-shredding psychedelic pop music. deep-as-hell rotella decollages from made-up worlds where this stuff grows everywhere. on earth it’s cryptobotanical. hydrophonic dagobah loops, low-end data-obliteration overtures, and general all-round friendship-termination.

7" vinyl. 150 copies.

november 2009 release ; deluxe cd / dvd combo covering a series of performances given at the titular event in 2007 by a great selection of contemporary and historic sound artists & instrument builders :: akio suzuki, ernie althoff, bart hopkin, marcelempiricalbear (performing here with rosy parlane), phillip dadson, metal rouge’s helgayek koofassonaki, tom nunn, walter kitundu, adam willets, and more ...

phil dadson organized the event to showcase both the instruments themselves as well as the builders’ ability to perform / improvise on their own creations ... the event itself was laid out akin to derek bailey’s “company week” ; many of the participants partake in ad hoc groupings (including one intense pile-up w/ pretty much everyone involved) in addition to “demo’ing” their creations via soloshowcases” ...

luxury cd / dvd edition c/o the new zealand atoll label (same that released the fantastic douglas lilburn set - now sadly o/p although i’m hearing rumors of a mid-line reissue early in 2010) in a 6-panel digipak with a lovely matte 12-page booklet offering tons of close-ups of the instruments & players ... completely different tracklist / content for the cd & dvd, with almost 3 hours of self-built instrumental overload ...

highly recommended !!!
atoll press release...

s3d (ear & eye) presented a world of fresh sonics from new and unexpected sources with names as idiosyncratic and offbeat as the players and their inventions; analopos, blue, mothics, shimsaw, zitherum, gloopspring, crustacean, savart's wheel . . & the list goes on.

seven innovators in their field of experimental musical instrument building and performance travelled to auckland to join with 5 local practitioners for three packed days of public workshops and performances, where acoustical, physical, electronic and virtual worlds came together in a unique chemistry.

akio suzuki (japan), bart hopkin, yek koo (helga fassonaki), tom nunn (usa), walter kitundu (tanzania / us), graeme leak, ernie althoff (australia), with marcel bear, sam morrison, james mccarthy, adam willetts & phil dadson (new zealand).

s3d has its genesis in rev, a 5 day worlds-first festival, celebrating musical instrument invention and performance at the power house in brisbane in 2003, where international contributors bart hopkins (usa), david toop, scanner (uk) & phil dadson (nz) were invited to join with local artists for a week of performances, seminars, exhibitions and installations. s3d differs by focussing on builder/performers with improvising skills to work solo and collaboratively through the three days of sonic exploration.

s3d celebrates the magic of the new and unexpected with musical instruments and sounds that blur boundaries between art and music.

held march 17, 18, 19, 2007, galatos theatre, as part of ak07.
