the third part in this ongoing series features percussionist kevin shea, the processing work of adam sonderberg, and violinist dan warburton. these three perspectives cover varying grounds of percussive insanity, microanalysis of texture, and dark swells of surreal melody. out of the series thus far, these three tales reflect the most varied ideas and differing moods, reinforcing the power of the individual experience. a text piece, which was written, edited, modified, and recycled by the three participants is also included.

kevin shea studied music at the berklee college of music in boston. as a drummer/composer he has toured europe, canada and the u.s. most recently he has two releases on touch and go records with the collective stormandstress. current projects include coptic light with jon fine of bitch magnet, and love of everything.

adam sonderberg works predominantly with concrete-based compositions utilizing the computer as a discrete processing and assembly tool. his instrument of choice in a live context is the guitar: tabletop and acoustic.

dan warburton received his phd at the eastman school of music, rochester, ny. a british-born pianist/violinist/composer, he moved to paris in 1988, where his activities have included music composition and performance, as well as broadcasting and journalism for the publications signal to noise, the wire, pulse!, and paristransatlantic.com.

mouths is a project by jon mueller and jim schoenecker using percussion, analogue synthesizer, shortwave radio, and human voice. their focus is on combining elements to create a chorus of sorts, culminating in all 'mouths' emitting their voices together without negating one another. this version of 1v2e, recorded live in concert in milwaukee last year, features the addition of werner moebius on computer and devices.

haptic, a chicago-based trio, consists 0f steven hess (pan amerlcan/dropp ensemble/on/fessenden), joseph muls (jonathan chen/ dropp ensemble), and adam sonderberg (civil war/dropp ensemble). initially conceived as a vehicle for live collaboration, haptic has since incorporated a different, rotating fourth member for each performance. for danjon scale, haptic's second published composition, the emphasis was on constructing a larded unfurling of sonorous informatlon.

composed and assembled by dellaria/sonderberg, february - march 2003 in chicago, il. recorded by dropp ensemble (chicago, paris, sydney, vienna).

this disc features music commissioned for the play 'the empire builders' by boris vian. consisting of three long tracks, the music is quiet and meditative, due in part to the fact that it is a soundtrack, and to support the plot and action of the play. this plot and action though is not about comfortable ambience. rather, the sound clearly identifies the play's themes of paranoia, rising tension, and escape. the soundtrack focuses on the psychological turmoil that the play addresses via its characters. the quiet and dark spaces explored on the recording are a successful quest in transmitting the unspoken fear, the unknown, and the doom of complacency experienced by the characters, making the recording able to stand on its own beyond the physical viewing of the play.

“the more adam and i work together, the less involved we are in the sound producing elements on our records. most of what we did on "the empire builders" was assemby, that is selecting recordings from material provided to us by members of the ensemble. the bulk of "introduktion" was electonics, guitar and percussion recorded live in what appeared to be an old meat locker. "grå" is modified recordings of adam's boiler room. dessutom was assembled from recodings given to us by wolfgang, alexander and eric. ta da.” - sam dellaria
